O Nosso Fado was inspired by Wenona Giles' real life account of Portuguese office workers in Toronto who staged their own wildcat strike in 1974. The company found the account of the women, and specifically the real life reluctant organizer Lurdes, to be a compelling and heart wrenching place to begin their own story.
Writer Kathy Martinez’, who much like “Lucy” as a young girl would accompany her mother, an office cleaner, to work in the evenings, instantly connected to the story. From the pages of Portuguese Women at Work: Gender, Immigration and Nationalism and the personal stories of the ethnically diverse company, Martinez crafted her own story of community and mother daughter relationships.
Kathy Martinez worked to refine the story through mentorship with Loretto Alumnus and playwright Maureen Gualtieri (Odd One Out, Fringe 2017). Through Maureen's guidance, Kathy was able to enrich and clarify the intricate relationships between characters.
