The Farm
Our Farm Hostel has many surprises reserved for you! From our permaculture garden to our food forest, we offer you the possibility to learn and discover about a greener way of life. Come and walk in our pedagogical garden, quiet and away from the city, and experience the rural Portuguese farm life.
Permaculture Garden
With more than 2000m² of land, and about 1000m² of plantations, we intend to produce enough for our daily community meals.
Why “Permaculture” ?
Simply because permaculture is much more than organic gardening, and it encompases the bigger picture of what self-reliant and sustainable living means.
Orchard and Food Forest
With more than 35 fruit trees on our plot, we offer a rich variety of fruit throughout all seasons. We also have several quiet areas to read, write, paint, or enjoy the view of our valley.
Orchard and Food Forest ?
The property already had an orange orchard. Obviously we wanted to enjoy these trees for their fruits as much as their shade so we decided to keep them the way they were. On the other side of the farm we had various fruit trees and decided to reimagine the space in order to create a food forest.
What is a Food Forest ?
A food forest, also called a forest garden, mimics the diversity of a natural forest where a variety of plants grow together as an ecosystem.
Animals
Our free range chickens are friends, they are part of our ecosystem and help us transform and fertilize our compost. We plan to expand our family with some goats and donkey soon.
What is some of the fauna you have in the area ?
Our land attracts a lot of birds. In the area you will commonly see the black raven or the night owl. Serra da Lousã is also home to a lot of wild animals such as squirrels, rabbits, foxes, wild boar, goats, badgers and deer. We are at the border of a forest and natural reserve, makimg it not umcommon to meet some of our furry friends during an evening or early morning walk.
